What Can't Be Erased: 2009.02.07

Just a little something about the band behind the song whose title inspired my auto-bio work's name... the band has broken up, but the lead singer (who recorded most of the music himself anyways) is still running strong here...

One of the greatest happy/sad songs ever recorded (playing in that comic).

Kimera... a David Okum joint?

Had another of those "killing time, sketching someone else's character" moments... and popped out this quick sketch of David Okum's Kimera. I like drawing characters with costume/body elements I'd never create myself (the spikes, the cowl) - it forces me outside my comfort zone, something I like to do once in a while...

David's an artist I met a couple years back at 24 Hour Comic Day and have been following his sketch blog with great interest this year... he's holding to a Sketch A Day pretty well. Gotta say, I'm impressed!

What Can't Be Erased: 2009.01.31

Trying a simplified style... still mulling it all over.

A style for my lifestyle.

Some time back, when I had first self-published my auto-bio comic "What Can't Be Erased" I showed it to another artist and she said it was good, but told me the higher level of detail (whatever that means in MY art) detracted from the story.

Strangely this has stuck with me. Now, for the last year I've been working on a pseudo-superhero book - so the detail has been fine. As that book winds down, I find myself right back with that dilemma... and trying to figure out what style to use as I re-invest myself in some auto-bio stuff (watch here - I've, obviously, settled on Blogger over LiveJournal). It just adds an extra level of complication - I can't start drawing until I decide how detailed I'm supposed to make myself...

It's a new year... yay?

Is this a hint at things to come? Do these characters have anything to do with my next project?

I have no idea - but it's certainly a possibility...

Trot: Yeah - a horse racing magazine...

So - as many of you know (and some don't) - I do illustrations for Canada's largest Harness Racing magazine. It's a weird gig, but I love anything that keeps me thinking and trying new things. I don't want to post anything here that hasn't seen print - but here's one from May (or so) this year... I keep trying new things with the layouts, and there's one early in the new year that has dark room slideshow lighting. Pretty fun.

Other people's characters...

So - when I work on my weekly political comics, I often find myself doodling during the scan/colour process to keep my mind busy (weird, I know) - and if I like the doodle, I wind up finishing it after sending that week's offering off to my editor.

This is one of those... Ross Campbell's Shadoweyes.

Enjoy.

See more of Ross' work here.
